This axe was hand forged from a solid piece of 4140 steel. The head is approx. 6" long and has a 4 1/2" cutting edge. The axe and handle combined weigh only 2.4 lbs. This size axe is both easy to pack and still capable of hard work. The entire head is heat treated and the upper and lower edges of the axe are square edges making it easy to use the edges for making scrappings/shavings and striking a ferro rod. The poll is squared to serve a hammmer for driving wooden stakes, wedges, or tent pegs as well as processing materials for cordage etc.
The handle is a 26" boys axe hickory handle that has been stained to give it an aged look. It was then soaked in lineseed oil and buffed with beeswax and fitted to the head with both wood and steel wedges.
